I’ve been on vacation from work over the past week and have been thinking a lot about the things that I could have been doing. I’m located on the East Coast but would have much rather spent my vacation at Anime Expo rather than sitting home. I love spending as much time as possible at conventions these days and have been to at least one per year since 2011. If you have not been to a convention before, I’d highly recommend checking one out. They’re a really good time. In fact, here are my top 5 reasons for going to anime conventions:
1. A chance to escape from the boring day to day stuff.
Let’s face it. Everyday life can get dull at times and you need to find ways to shake things up a bit. What better way than to go to a place where people are dedicated to giving life to creatures and characters of fantasy?
2. A chance to meet new and interesting people.
At conventions, you get to be around people that are passionate about the things that they enjoy. You will run into people that love anime, manga, and video games as much as (or maybe more) than you do. It is completely refreshing to be around so many people with similar interest. In fact, I remember getting to meet the members of the Otaku Generation podcast at their meetup during Otakon 2013. It was an amazing experience to get to be around fellow podcasters in the same niche as OJN.
3. A chance to get exposed to new things.
You probably could not have told me in 2007 that I would find a series that I’d consider one of the best series that I’ve ever seen at an anime convention. It is true though! At Zenkaikon 2007, I was exposed to the series Densha Otoko (Train Man) while hanging out in the live action video room while waiting for some other events to start. I’m sure that many other people have had similar experiences with things regarding Japanese culture, games, music, and much more!
4. A chance to party like geeks do!
Many of the conventions that I go to feel like a weekend long party. You have all types of cool events going on at conventions ranging from raves, cosplay dances, and live concerts. The live concerts are probably one of my favorite at con events. My most memorable has to be the TM Revolution concert that I attended at Otakon 2013.
5. A chance to experience things that you’ll never forget.
A few things are probably more memorable than meeting the person who had a huge part in the music that I’ve been listening to since I was a teenager; Yoko Kanno. How could I forget being in line at 7 am on opening day of Otakon just to get a pass to her autograph session? This was really big for me. Furthermore, I can never forget the amazement that I felt when I ran into Sonny Strait into the hallway at Zenkaikon. I’m already on memory lane thinking back to just a few months ago where Jim Cummings told me to “Stay dangerous” in the voice of Darkwing Duck. Conventions are a place where memories are made. There are so many opportunities to have something great happen.
What are some of the reason that you go to conventions? This doesn’t have to be just about anime conventions either. Share some of your convention experiences in the comments and don’t forget to subscribe to the blog so that you never miss a new post from us. Thanks for reading!
