Solanin – Movie Review

What are you passionate about? If you had to choose between a boring and predictable life, or living in the moment doing the things that make you happy, which would you choose? What is the path that you prefer to take? The movie Solanin touches heavily on this subject by showing the musical journey of one band to find their own individual answers these questions.

Trailers for Solanin

The Solanin movie is based on the popular manga by the same name written by Asano Inio. This movie is focused on a band and it’s members as they struggle with the transition between being students and becoming adults. The movie has a great musical vibe (obviously) with the title track “Solanin” being performed by Asian Kung-fu Generation.

One of the more interesting aspects of Solanin is the character development. The story begins with the main character, Meiko, working as an unhappy office woman. What follows is a musical journey into adulthood. All of her friends all are dealing with similar issues in their own way. Without giving too much of the story away, this movie does get pretty heavy at some points.

If you are a fan of j-rock (Japanese rock), this may be a title that you will really enjoy.
